When this resource is useful
A four-panel limit gives older and younger children meaningful roles without requiring identical drawing skills.
What children do
Decide the setting and problem, then assign panels or roles. Keep characters original and unbranded.
Materials and preparation
Materials: Printed pages and pencils; use only the optional ordinary materials named on the page.
Allow about 2 minutes to print and place the resource. The activity itself usually takes 35 minutes and can pause when the group needs to transition.
Run the activity
Use planner, penciller, letterer, continuity checker and materials roles. Review the whole sequence before adding final details.
The child-facing prompts are:
- Panel 1: establish the place.
- Panel 2: show a problem.
- Panel 3: show an attempt.
- Panel 4: show a change or solution.
- Add one repeated visual clue.
- Use speech only where it changes the action.
- Check that panel order is clear.
- Choose a title together.
Adapt participation
Simpler way to join: Use two panels and oral captions.
More challenge: Retell the event from another character’s viewpoint.
Children may draw, dictate, point, work beside a peer, observe or join later. Start, Explore and Extend labels describe task routes, not children.
Extend the idea
- Perform the panels as frozen scenes.
- Create a sequel with one changed condition.
Safety and privacy
Use original characters and avoid copying commercial superheroes or comic properties.
Learning opportunities
Look for collaboration, communication, fair participation and shared problem-solving. Record what children choose, explain, test or revise rather than treating completion as proof of learning.
Checking an open-ended response
There is no single required answer. A useful response follows the printed condition and can be explained, demonstrated or revised by the child.
Printing notes
Print at actual size on A4 paper. Page one is child-facing. Page two contains educator guidance and a dashed cut-off reference card that can be kept with the activity or laminated.
