Culture is more than a collection of fixed symbols
Compare contextualised contemporary examples without reducing people to symbols.
Use contextualised contemporary accounts that show different experiences. Comparing them can reveal variation and change, while avoiding the implication that one person is less authentic because their life differs from a familiar classroom image.
Identify context. Notice varied experiences. Write qualified descriptions.
Look for diversity within the broad label
Choose sources that show contemporary lives and different experiences. A collection of decorative symbols alone provides a narrow representation.
Two accounts from the same broad group may describe different practices.
What variation is visible? Use short sourced extracts.
Difference does not make one account less authentic.
