Paraphrasing checks understanding; it does not require agreement
Check understanding before replying.
Ask one partner to restate the other's point and invite a correction. The speaker's confirmation matters because repeating familiar words can miss the reason behind the preference or proposal.
Invite the speaker to correct the paraphrase. Understanding has been checked only when the original speaker can confirm or revise it.
Let the original speaker check the meaning
Let one partner explain. Restate the idea. Invite correction.
'You want a shorter game because pickup is soon' can be checked by the speaker.
Did the speaker confirm the meaning? Use short phrases or symbols.
Paraphrase is not agreement.
