A food-web diagram leaves most of the habitat out
Treat a simplified diagram as selected relationships.
A simplified diagram can help trace a relationship precisely because it selects a few elements. Discuss that selection explicitly, so readers do not mistake three pictured organisms for the entire living community.
Follow the diagram's key and discuss omitted relationships. Simplification supports understanding only when readers recognise the boundaries of the model.
Follow the key and name the omissions
A diagram showing three organisms does not mean the habitat contains only three kinds.
Read its key. Follow one relationship. Identify omitted complexity.
What does the diagram leave out? Trace a single arrow first.
A model is selective.
