Insect watching without collecting a specimen
Record visible features while leaving animals and habitat undisturbed.
A child can make a valuable observation without naming the species or handling the animal. Focus on visible features from a suitable viewpoint, leaving uncertain details open for later checking with an appropriate source.
'Six visible legs' is more defensible than guessing a species name.
A careful description can include unknowns
Describe only features visible from the observation point. An uncertain identification can be recorded honestly and revisited with a suitable source.
Observe from a distance. Draw visible features. Add uncertainty notes.
Avoid touching unknown animals.
Which features were actually seen? Use clear photographs instead.
