Theme Planning Matrix
Print a theme planning table with your focus areas and blank space for activities, materials, timing and participation or weather options.
Use 1–6 focus areas, one per line, up to 80 characters each. Edit these starting points to suit your group.
Use theme and activity descriptions without names or private information. Fill the planning table in by hand.
Check the theme and focus areas, then create the planning table.
Plan several ways to explore one theme
Allow about 10–15 minutes with the printed table and a pen. Choose a theme with the group, then keep or replace the focus areas. You do not need an activity for every area. Use each row to describe what children will do, the materials and space needed, a realistic duration, and a participation or weather option.
For Ocean explorers, a making row might propose folding paper boats and testing them in a shallow tray for 20 minutes. Record paper, a tray, water, towels and a table, then offer drawing, folding, observing or a seated role. A movement row might describe following a pretend shoreline with floor markers; its weather option could move the route indoors. Check water use, surfaces, tools and supervision with your own service processes.
Younger children can suggest choices through pointing, drawing or talking. Older children can compare materials, suggest durations or develop a quieter version. Offer help, observing or passing. Use an outdoor row only when you have a suitable space and conditions; replace it if your program is indoors.
Turn selected ideas into a schedule
This is a blank planning matrix, not an automatically approved program. Check timing, equipment availability, transitions and supervision before selecting activities. It does not assess learning outcomes or staffing ratios. Take the chosen ideas into the program planner, or use the learning-opportunity mapper to consider specific actions and supports.
Print and keep the template
The matrix prints up to three focus areas per page. Choose A4 or US Letter, use 100% scale and turn browser headers and footers off. Each row provides about 50 mm of planning space. Save settings keeps the title, theme, focus areas and paper size in a local file. Handwritten plans are not stored by this website.
