Write the observation before the interpretation
Record the action and context before considering meaning.
Checked three joins before adding the roof records a visible process. Starting there gives another educator evidence to consider, unlike a personality label that asks them to accept a judgement without seeing what happened.
'Checked three joins before adding the roof' records an observable process.
Keep action and context in the note
Keep description separate from interpretation in the note. Another observer should be able to recognise the recorded action without accepting a personality label.
Describe what happened. Add relevant context. Separate possible interpretations.
Avoid labels such as lazy or gifted. Could another observer verify the action?
Use brief factual notes.
