Teen numbers as a ten and some more
Build a group of ten and a visible remainder rather than relying only on number names.
Build one complete group of ten and leave the remaining objects visible beside it. The arrangement gives children something to connect with the spoken number name while keeping the total available to check.
Show the ten as a group while keeping the remaining ones visible. Connect spoken number names to the represented quantities.
Keep the ten together
Fill the frame with ten. Add a small extra group. Match the model to a teen numeral.
Four extra counters beside a full ten-frame represent 14 as ten and four.
Where are the ten and the extra ones? Use pre-arranged frames and partner counting.
Do not confuse the remainder with the whole number.
