Equal groups give multiplication a structure
Identify the number of groups and the quantity within each before finding the total.
Arrange objects into groups and inspect whether every group contains the same number. That condition matters: a collection of unequal groups cannot be described by the selected equal-group multiplication model without further work.
Check that every group contains the same amount. Unequal groups require a different model from the selected multiplication representation.
Check the groups before writing the equation
Four groups of three contain twelve counters; say the group interpretation rather than leaving notation unexplained.
Place three counters in each circle. Count the equal groups. Record the total with stated conventions.
Unequal group sizes need a different description.
Which number names the groups? Use already-drawn group boundaries.
