Doubles facts with two equal groups underneath them

Build equal groups and explain what is being doubled.

Place two matching groups beside the written addition. Children can explain where the double comes from and check the total, linking a useful known fact with the quantities it describes.

To hand: Two matching groups of counters.

Count one group. Duplicate it exactly. Record both the model and total.

Make the equal parts visible

Represent two equal groups before recording the fact. Recognition of the double should connect to the underlying equal quantities.

Two groups of four contain eight, represented by 4 + 4 = 8.

Two groups need equal quantities for this doubles model. What quantity is repeated?

Match objects across the two groups.
