A field-note caption can honestly say unidentified

Include the observation's place, date and visible evidence.

Give another observer the place, date and visible features rather than an unsupported species name. An accurate uncertain caption preserves more useful information than a polished label that pretends identification has been settled.

Include uncertainty in the caption rather than hiding it. Another observer should be able to distinguish identification from visible description.

Record the uncertainty alongside the detail

Describe the subject. Add observation context. Mark uncertain identification.

'Unknown small insect on leaf, photo point A' preserves uncertainty.

Could another observer understand the record? Dictate the caption.

Do not guess a precise species for a polished caption.
