Story Prompt Generator

Choose fictional characters, settings and problems, then print a story plan with drawing or writing space.

Leave a list blank to use the selected theme. Each custom list allows up to 12 entries of 80 characters. Use fictional characters and leave out personal information.

The same inputs and seed recreate the same prompts.

Create a story sheet to see the printable.

Plan, draw or tell a story

Children use the character, place and problem to decide what happens. Read the planning questions together, then draw, write or tell the story aloud. An adult can record a younger child’s words. Partners can compare different endings made from the same prompt. For a longer task, choose the extra problem and explain how it changes the character’s plan. Allow about 15–30 minutes for planning and a first version, with more time for revising.
