A practical Australian money skills activity
Select from fictional practice prices, total a purchase and stay within a fixed budget. The printable gives children a specific task, visible response space and enough information to begin without a long educator explanation.
What children do
Choose at least two menu items. Record the total, check it is $10 or less, then calculate the amount left.
Prepare and facilitate
Materials: Printed worksheet, pencil and optional colouring tools. Allow about two minutes to print and place the page. The activity usually takes 30 minutes.
Say clearly that the menu uses pretend prices. Children may use counters, a number line or a calculator.
Keep examples fictional. Do not ask children to share household income, access to money, political preferences, addresses or family voting choices.
Answer guide
- Answers vary. Valid plan: Apple $2 + Yoghurt $3 + Sandwich $5 = $10, $0 left.
- Another valid plan: Water $2 + Fruit cup $4 = $6, $4 left.
Adapt participation
Simpler way to join: Read the task aloud, complete one example together and allow pointing, moving tokens or dictating instead of writing.
More challenge: Create a balanced three-item choice for exactly $9, then show two ways to check the total.
Learning opportunities
Look for financial vocabulary, calculation, choice-making and explaining a strategy. Ask a child to show a match, calculation, sequence or reason; completion alone is not evidence of understanding.
