A substantial Eco Heroes project

Reuse-and-repair station is a Design-and-test challenge designed to stay available for about 75 minutes. Children investigate planning, collaboration, purposeful making and explaining revisions through a concrete shared task rather than completing identical work.

Educational purpose

This invitation gives children opportunities to develop planning, collaboration, purposeful making and explaining revisions. Look for the decisions children make, the language they use to explain an idea and the evidence they notice after trying it. A finished model is optional; the planning, testing and discussion are valuable parts of the experience.

Goal

Use the reuse-and-repair station prompt to make a labelled plan or model, ask another child to test or interpret it, then revise one part.

Materials

Paper, card, tape, pencils, floor spots, blocks, lightweight loose parts and measuring tools already approved by the service.

Set up

• Display the reuse-and-repair station prompt and identify the real decisions children can make.
• Set out a limited first selection of materials and a quieter planning area.
• Offer planning, making, testing, illustrating and explaining roles.

Run the activity

1. Describe what the reuse-and-repair station should show, solve or allow someone to do.
2. Draw or arrange the key parts and explain how they connect.
3. Make a first version using only the materials needed for the central idea.
4. Invite another child to try or interpret it; record one specific observation.
5. Use that observation to revise the work and explain why the change helps.

Adapt participation

Offer fewer materials, picture steps, pre-cut pieces and drawing, arranging or explaining roles.

Extend the challenge

Add a realistic user, size, time or materials constraint and document the reason for each revision.

Safety

• Check tools, materials, floor space and supervision against local service procedures.
• Keep walkways clear and use only clean, lightweight construction materials suitable for the children present.
• Participation, observing and an alternative activity remain available choices.
