Where a word search fits in vocabulary practice
Introduce and use the words outside the grid so the letter search has a clear supplementary role.
Finding a hidden word can be enjoyable, especially after children have explored its meaning. Keep the puzzle's role specific: it offers word-finding practice, while understanding, decoding and meaningful use need other opportunities too.
After locating 'bridge', a learner draws one and explains its purpose rather than only circling letters.
Follow the find with a meaning question
Use the puzzle as optional vocabulary practice alongside meaningful language work. Finding a word does not demonstrate decoding fluency or understanding by itself.
Explain selected words before searching. Find a manageable number together. Use one word in a new spoken or drawn example.
Grid completion does not measure overall reading ability.
Can the learner explain a chosen word? Reduce targets and read the bank aloud.
