Compose within four beats, including the quiet spaces
Compose a short pattern using a defined beat frame.
Draw four beat boxes and agree how much time the available symbols occupy. Children can then arrange a complete pattern and check its fit, rather than discovering after performance that the notation has no shared duration.
To hand: Four beat boxes and symbol cards.
- Mark the beat frame.
- Place sound and rest choices.
- Test the pattern.
Make the frame readable before filling it
A rest in box two changes the pattern without removing that beat.
Define how much time each symbol occupies before arranging it. A shared beat frame makes the composition readable by another participant.
Define symbol durations before performing.
Does the pattern fit the frame? Use large tactile symbols.
Resources
- Rhythm Pattern Partner Cards — Use the pattern cards with a clear symbol key and optional quiet participation.
