STEM Activities & Science Experiments for OSHC & Classrooms
Introduction Welcome to our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) collection! We believe that the innovators of tomorrow are built today—often with just a piece of paper, some tape, and a big idea. For OSHC educators and teachers, finding STEM resources that are fun, low-mess, and accessible can be a challenge. That is why we have created these free printable STEM challenges. Whether you are running a “Mad Science” afternoon in vacation care, setting up a “Maker Space” in your classroom, or looking for hands-on homeschooling science units, these activities turn complex concepts into engaging play.
Educational Benefits & Framework Links These resources are designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking, aligning perfectly with the My Time, Our Place (MTOP) Framework and the Australian Curriculum:
Outcome 4 (Children are confident and involved learners): This is the core of STEM. Our activities encourage children to use a range of skills and processes such as problem-solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesizing, researching, and investigating. When a child builds a paper bridge that collapses, they learn resilience and redesign—the engineering design process in action.
Outcome 2 (Children are connected with and contribute to their world): Many of our STEM sheets focus on sustainability and nature (e.g., “Nature Scavenger Hunts” or “Recycled Material Challenges”), helping children understand their environment.
Digital Technologies (Unplugged): You don’t need computers to teach coding! Our “Unplugged Coding” worksheets teach algorithms and sequencing using just a pencil and paper.
How to Use These Resources
The “Maker Station”: Print a stack of our “Engineering Challenge” cards (e.g., Build the Tallest Tower) and place them next to a box of recycled materials (straws, cardboard, tape). It’s a self-directed activity that can run for hours.
Group Projects: STEM is better together! Pair children up to complete a “Design a Boat” challenge. This fosters collaboration and communication (Outcome 5) as they negotiate ideas and test their theories.
Science Week: Use these printables as the backbone of your National Science Week programming in August. They are themed, educational, and ready to go.
